How to sew a women's t-shirt with a contrast shoulder

In today's post: Larn how to hack my Classic Tee pattern to add a contrast shoulder.

A few years ago when I drafted upwards my Classic Tee pattern, I so was excited to have a pattern that would yield a t-shirt that fit just the way I similar! But y'all know what? It turns out I don't really make most of my t-shirts. It's and then easy to find tees on sale for less than they would cost to make! However, I still get a ton of utilise out of the Classic Tee design, considering I utilise it equally a starting indicate for all kinds of knit tops and dresses. In fact, a quick count shows I accept eleven dissimilar sewing posts on the weblog that all started with the same bones t-shirt design. (The Classic Tee pattern is in women'due south size large only, as are all the variations.)

To make this top, you'll need to visit the Classic Tee mail service and download the gratis printable pattern. Follow the instructions in that postal service for printing and taping together the pattern, and for prewashing your knit fabric.

For this variation, nosotros are going to add a contrasting panel that goes beyond the shoulders of the shirt. So yous will want a main fabric (for near of the shirt piece and the sleeve pieces) and a pocket-sized amount of a contrast fabric (for the contrast shoulder panels).

We'll begin by slicing up the shirt blueprint every bit shown below (sleeve pattern does non become changed). Showtime, cut a diagonal line from the neck to the armscye as you can see in the photo below. 2d, cut off 1/2 an inch at the shoulder seam, equally shown by the purple dotted line.

At present you can cut out the larger pattern pieces from your main fabric, and the smaller angled shoulder pieces from a dissimilarity material. BE Sure to add i/2 inch seam allowance along the line where the shirt design was sliced on both the shirt pieces and the contrast pieces. Also, you will cutting the smaller contrast piece ON THE FOLD, which is why we cut one-half an inch off the pattern at that spot.

At present you will have 2 shirt pieces and two contrast pieces. Be sure one shirt piece is cut using the front end neckline and the other is cutting using the back neckline.

The contrast pieces need to utilize both the front end and back necklines too. Open up the dissimilarity pieces, and they will await like the photo on the left below (only using the dorsum neckline). Cut along one side of each contrast slice using the front neckline then they look similar the photograph on the right.

Time for associates! Beginning by laying the front shirt slice down on a flat surface, with the right side facing up.

Then lay a dissimilarity piece on top of it, matching the areas where you lot cutting the pattern apart and added seam allowance. Be sure correct sides friction match, and exist sure you are matching up the office of the contrast slice that was cut using the front neckline. Run up together using a i/ii inch seam assart.

Repeat with the contrast piece on the other side, and and then press the seams open.

Side by side yous'll attach the contrast pieces to the back main piece in the aforementioned way. Once the contrast pieces are attached to the dorsum, the shirt volition look like this:

At this point, the residuum of structure continues in the exact same manner as is described in the Archetype Tee mail service (pick upwardly right after you sew the shoulder seams together).

It's an piece of cake modification that gives a lot of interest to a plain t-shirt.
